Materials

Materials selected for function.

Compare material categories against part function and operating conditions. Confirm the exact grade, material condition, and availability for each quotation.

Precision-machined aluminum component

AL / Material considerations

Aluminum

Compare the specified alloy and temper with the part's strength, weight, operating environment, geometry, and finish requirements. Do not assume that every aluminum grade machines or finishes in the same way.

Review in the design

  • Thin walls, deep pockets, and long unsupported features
  • Internal corner radii and cutting-tool access
  • Cosmetic faces, masking, and post-finish dimensions

Include in the RFQ

  • Exact alloy and temper, or the function an alternative must support
  • Overall part dimensions and required quantity
  • Finish specification and any requested material records
Discuss the specified grade
Precision-machined stainless-steel component

SS / Material considerations

Stainless Steel

Specify the grade and service environment so corrosion, temperature, strength, geometry, and finish requirements can be reviewed together. A generic stainless-steel note is not enough when grade properties affect the application.

Review in the design

  • Thin sections, slender features, and distortion-sensitive geometry
  • Threads, deep holes, and areas with restricted tool access
  • Functional surfaces and appearance requirements after finishing

Include in the RFQ

  • Exact grade and material condition
  • Operating environment and critical interfaces
  • Surface requirement and any requested documentation
Discuss the specified grade
Precision-machined brass components

BR / Material considerations

Brass

Share the required brass grade and intended function, including any electrical, corrosion, appearance, thread, or fit requirements that matter to the component.

Review in the design

  • Small threads, thin sections, and delicate features
  • Mating diameters, sealing faces, and sliding interfaces
  • Visible surfaces and any specified post-processing

Include in the RFQ

  • Exact grade rather than brass as a general category
  • Part quantity, envelope size, and critical features
  • Finish, appearance, and material-record requirements
Discuss the specified grade
Machined engineering-plastics component

EP / Material considerations

Engineering Plastics

Name the exact polymer grade and describe the working environment. Temperature, moisture, chemicals, wear, load, and time-dependent movement can affect a plastic part differently from a metal component.

Review in the design

  • Wall thickness, stress concentration, and unsupported features
  • Threads, press fits, bearing surfaces, and assembly loads
  • Dimensional acceptance under the stated temperature and moisture conditions

Include in the RFQ

  • Polymer family, exact grade, color, and supplied condition
  • Operating temperature, chemical exposure, wear, and load context
  • Critical fits, surface requirements, and allowed alternatives
Discuss the specified grade

Material RFQ checklist

Give the quotation one material basis.

Material availability and suitability are confirmed for each project. If an alternative may be considered, state which functional requirements it must preserve instead of leaving the substitution open-ended.

  • Part number, drawing revision, units, and quantity
  • Exact material grade, temper, condition, color, or permitted alternative
  • Critical dimensions, mating interfaces, and operating environment
  • Surface finish, post-processing, masking, and post-finish acceptance requirements
  • Any requested material, inspection, or finish records

Material selection

Not sure which material fits?

Share the part requirements and specified grade in your quote request. If the grade is still open, describe the operating conditions and the requirements the material needs to meet.
